Kilvington is committed to providing quality acceleration and enrichment opportunities to students who have the potential to achieve at an exceptional level. Our Gifted and Talented Program is designed to support highly able students within and beyond the classroom.
At Kilvington, academic acceleration can include early promotion of individual students to the next level based on their academic achievements or readiness for the higher-level work. This can be an approach aimed at a student in our gifted and talented program.
Enrichment covers activities in content areas that are completed outside the regular curriculum. This is a student-centred model focusing on engagement and motivation by addressing the talents, passions and interests of all students. This tends to be student-driven and challenges students to develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Students are selected to participate in the Gifted and Talented program based on an extensive selection process. Identification occurs though an examination of formal assessment results (internal and external), student performance, teacher and parent recommendations. Students’ individual talents and aptitudes are recognised and considered and opportunities for talent development will be determined by their strengths.
In line with Kilvington’s holistic approach to education, we also work to ensure that their social experiences and co-curricular opportunities are enriching and rewarding.
To assist students in maximising their potential, Kilvington has created a range of Masterclasses that selected students are invited to attend.
Empires of the Mind
In 2015, Kilvington hosted its inaugural Empires of the Mind conference aimed at providing schools’ brightest young minds to shine. It was a tremendous success and is now an annual event.
Gifted and talented students from Kilvington and other schools are given the opportunity to meet like-minded peers and to participate in a one day events designed to inspire and challenge their thinking.
