Performing Arts
Making music is arguably one of the healthiest things you can do for your brain. It tunes your listening skills, sharpens your mental acuity, and boosts language skills. In children, making music speeds up brain development. Music develops emotional, social, motor and cognitive skills from early childhood.
— Dr Anita Collins | Bigger Better Brains
Extensive research suggests that music has significant benefits for students’ academic studies by developing concentration, comprehension and dexterity. Studying a musical instrument assists children’s cognitive abilities. Students undertake music classes at Kilvington from ELC to VCE and is compulsory to Year 8. Music can be chosen as an elective at Year 9 and studied at VCE from Year 10.
Instrumental & Choir
Focusing on the development of theoretical and compositional performance skills, in both group and solo, students will gain confidence performing in front of others in a fun, relaxed, engaging, and supportive environment.
2023 Centenary Concert | Hamer Hall
I spent a lot of time as a child at the Yehudi Menuhin School in the UK, and I don’t think I have seen such skilful playing from young people since then as I did last night; just brilliant. The precision and professionalism of all the performances were amazing.
— Ginny Telfar - Parent feedback | Kilvington Centenary Concert
Kilvington’s dynamic vocal program nurtures a love for music across all year levels, offering enriching opportunities for students to shine. In the Junior School, students from Years 1–6 participate in choirs during weekly rehearsals, with Prep students joining for special events. For those seeking more challenge, the Klefs extension choir is available for Years 4–6. In the Senior School, the program expands with curriculum choirs for Years 7–8 and a vibrant co-curricular selection, including Kadence (girls’ choir), Krooners (boys’ choir), the Contemporary Choir, and the auditioned Kantabile ensemble for advanced singers.
Music Tuition
We offer expert private music tuition for a diverse range of instruments, with the convenience of an in-school location. Many of our expert teaching staff have professional performance careers and offer excellent mentoring to upcoming students. Students are encouraged to enroll in AMEB and Trinity external examinations, providing genuine goals to strive for as they begin their musical journey.
Drama, Theatre and Dance Studies
We also offer a dynamic performing arts program that inspires creativity and confidence. Students can join individual or group Speech and Drama lessons, culminating in a showcase at the annual Speech and Drama Concert. Lunchtime drama clubs provide additional opportunities for emerging talents, with formal Drama and Theatre Studies available from Year 10 through VCE.
For dance enthusiasts, the Kilvington Dancers, open to Years 6–12, rehearse weekly and dazzle audiences at events like the Jazz Cabaret, Annual Concert, Celebration Night, and the Kilvington Dance Concert.
School Productions
Junior and Senior School productions are performed every year and are eagerly awaited and well-received by the whole school community.
Participating in a school production provides students with a valuable and enriching opportunity to showcase their talents in music, drama, and dance, ultimately boosting their confidence. In addition to highlighting individual skills, school productions offer a wide range of benefits, including the enhancement of critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creative skills - all essential components of a well-rounded education.
